Flies can be found around the world, and are a constant problem for humans. Their actual name, blowfly, is abbreviated from the word bloated. The word used to describe the condition of animal carcasses that flies use as nursery to lay their eggs and raise their larvae, or maggots. Blow flies will usually be found around dead animals. They are attracted by the rotting smell, and are happy to use it to breed and lay eggs. They can also be found in large numbers around garbage dumps, animals holding pens, and slaughterhouses. Oddly enough, the adult flies prefer to feed on the sugary sap or sweet nectar of flowering plants. They lay their eggs in rotting flesh of animals that have recently died. This gives their larvae (maggots) the nourishment they need to grow. Once the maggots are ready to pupate, they will fall on the ground and burrow in. Soon they will emerge as full grown flies and complete the circle of life. There are around 1200 species of blow flies throughout the world, and they are the most common type of fly. They differ greatly from house flies or fruit flies that they are a metallic blue or green in color. They also have larger heads than house flies, and are larger overall than fruit flies. Blow flies range from 0.28 to 0.63 in overall length, and their weight is almost nothing. If you find an infestation of blow flies in or around your home, you must always have a dead animal somewhere in your vicinity. Finding the dead animal is almost impossible because it will have been dead several weeks by the time you notice the flies. Even a tiny mouse can attract a herd of flies! Here are some tips to avoid this nasty infestation.

Do away with any possible breeding areas. This means dead animals, sources of feces, anything rotting, and garbage. It is necessary to remove materials that encourage flies to lay eggs. Killing the adult will cut down on their numbers, but eliminating breeding sources will cut down the reoccurring population.
